WHY ARE CARSON CITY GOLD COINS SO VALUABLE?

The reason Carson City gold coins are so rare, prized, and valuable, is they were minted in limited quantities, widely circulated, and experienced hoarding and mass melting, which has led to their scarcity and low survival rates.

Carson City Gold coins have a fascinating history due to their connection to the heydays of the "Wild West" from the 1870s through the early 1890s. These were the coins that Jesse James and his gang robbed from banks. It was a time of infamous personalities such as the American Frontiers' first gunfighter, "Wild" Bill Hicock. Then there is Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday and famous towns such as Dodge City and Tombstone Arizona.

The demand for these precious Gold coins far exceeds their supply. The Carson City Mint produced what would become very rare and valuable Gold coinage during its years of operation.

7 REASONS WHY CARSON CITY GOLD COINS ARE SO VALUABLE

Carson-City-Mint

1.) RARITY:

The rarity of Carson City Gold Coins plays a significant role in their value. As coins circulate, they tend to wear and accumulate damage.

A large percentage of Carson City Gold coins were melted down for their precious metal content, lost, or damaged over time through daily use in circulation.

This has resulted in limited numbers of surviving coins that exist today. Finding well-preserved examples of these coins, especially in higher-graded condition, becomes increasingly challenging.

Therefore, coins in superior condition fetch higher prices due to their scarcity and overall appeal to collectors and investors.

The scarcity of Carson City Gold coins has made them highly sought after and coveted by collectors and investors as late 19th-century American treasures worldwide!

2.) MARKET DEMAND:

Carson City Gold Coins have gained a considerable following among collectors and investors over the years, leading to a robust market demand.

The combination of their historical significance, limited mintages, distinctive mint mark, and rarity fuels the desire of collectors and investors.

The strong demand from passionate collectors and astute investors contributes to the elevated value of Carson City Gold Coins. Carson City Gold coins are widely collected and invested in globally.

Their market demand and popularity make them exceptional investment opportunities due to their impressive track record of consistent price appreciation and growth in value.

Carson City gold coins have proven to hold their value even when the rare coin market isn't performing at peak levels, as their demand always remains strong.

3.) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

One of the primary reasons Carson City Gold Coins hold such immense value is their historical significance. The Carson City Mint in Nevada is unquestionably the most historic and significant Mint in United States history. Each Gold coin produced there has a unique history and story behind it.

One could argue that Carson City Gold Coins were minted during one of the most legendary eras in American history, the "Wild West" between 1870 and 1893.

Their ties to this period of American history make them highly sought after by collectors and investors alike.

4.) INVESTMENT POTENTIAL:

When it comes to diversifying your investment portfolio of traditional assets such as stocks bonds, and real estate, among the gold investment options available, Carson City Gold coins hold a special allure.

These historic coins minted in the 19th century not only possess the inherent value of gold but also carry a rich history and rarity that make them an attractive and worthy investment. "CC" gold coins are an exceptional choice for investors looking to capitalize on their investment potential.

Carson City Gold coins possess historical significance, rarity, and legendary status, making them highly desirable among collectors and investors.

Carson City Gold coins already have a tremendous track record for growth in value and as demand continues to grow, their value is expected to appreciate significantly over time, offering potential returns well beyond their precious metal value.

5.) PORTFOLIO DIVERSIFICATION:

Collecting and Investing in Carson City Gold Coins is an exceptional opportunity to diversify your investment portfolio. Over the past few decades, Carson City Gold Coins have demonstrated strong market performance and an excellent history of price appreciation and growth in value.

Historical data prove that these coins have shown consistent appreciation in value, driven by both collector and investor demand.

Carson City Gold Coins offer an additional layer of diversification because of their "intrinsic" value. By including these coins in your portfolio, you can enhance their potential growth and reduce overall risk.

Carson City Gold Coins possess a unique investment potential that combines the allure of gold with the historical significance and rarity of these coins.

Their limited supply, "intrinsic" value, and strong market performance make them a worthy investment choice for those seeking to expand their investment portfolios beyond traditional assets.

By investing in Carson City Gold Coins, you not only secure a tangible asset but also become a custodian of history, providing a lasting legacy for generations to come.

6.) LIMITED MINTAGES:

Carson City Gold Coins were minted in relatively small quantities compared to other U.S. gold coins minted elsewhere at the time. The limited mintage numbers contribute to their rarity, making them more difficult to find in the rare coin market.

As a result, collectors and investors are willing to pay a premium for these coins due to their scarcity. The Carson City Mint was located in such a remote area in Nevada that many of their yearly mintages were not released for circulation outside of the Western territories.

Numismatists and collectors of the time had few opportunities to add Carson City Gold coins to their collections and preserve them.

The mintages released into Western territory circulation were used daily, causing wear and tear, only adding to their scarcity, rarity, and low survival rates in higher Uncirculated condition.

7.) DISTINCTIVE MINT MARK:

Carson City Gold Coins feature the "CC" mint mark, which identifies them as being produced at the Carson City Mint. This mint mark adds to their allure and desirability among collectors and investors, as it signifies their origin and their unique production history.

The distinct "CC" mint mark further enhances their value and makes them stand out in rare coin collections. The Carson City Mint was also known for its high-quality craftsmanship. Carson City Gold coins feature sharp details and crisp strikes, which adds to their value.

Carson City Gold Coins have established themselves as highly valuable and sought-after treasures in the world of coin collecting and investing.

The Carson City Mint opened in 1870 and immediately began producing gold coinage. During its 23-year history, Carson City minted three gold coin denominations for circulation, the $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, the $10 Liberty Head Eagle, and the $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle with the famous "CC" mintmark.

They are the only United States minted Gold coins to bear two letters to signify their origin of production. Carson City produced 19 issues of each denomination for circulation for only a minuscule total of 57 dates for all three denominations combined!

It is an astoundingly low mintage output when you consider the amount of $5, $10, and $20 Gold Liberty Head coins minted and released for circulation by the United State's other four mints between 1870 and 1893.

Even circulated Carson City minted Gold $5 Half eagles, $10 Eagles, and $20 Double Eagle coins graded less than Uncirculated Mint State condition command premium prices.

THE $5 CARSON CITY HALF EAGLE

The Carson City Mint struck $5 Gold Liberty Half Eagles from 1870 to 1884 and 1890 to 1893. Coins minted in the 1870s are scarce in all grades and become extremely rare as you climb into high Mint State grades.

Unsurprisingly, the first year of issue, the 1870-CC, is the rarest Carson City gold $5 Half Eagle. Specimens graded on the low end of the Sheldon rare coin grading scale in VF (Very Fine) condition trade at a minimum value of between $70,000 and $100,000!

1870 Carson City $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coin

The Carson City $5 Half Eagles minted in the 1870s experienced extensive melting and heavy circulation, accounting for their scarcity and low survival rates.

The coins minted in the 1880s present a little more opportunity as far as availability for investors and collectors but again fall into the category of scarce to extremely rare in high certified Mint State grades.

The coins minted in the 1890s are challenging to acquire but become more available in lower Uncirculated Mint State condition. There were only four years the $5 Half Eagle was minted in the 1890s.

Assembling a subset of the four coins in MS-63 condition is a realistic and attainable goal for a broader range of investors and collectors.

1890 Carson City $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin

Only about 700,000 gold $5 Half Eagles were minted at Carson City over 19 years, and only 1 to 1.5% are estimated to have survived today in all grades.

The 1891 $5 Half Eagle is the most common date in the series and alone accounts for over one-third of that surviving number! The lack of surviving examples diminishes sharply when you climb into higher grades.

The $5 Carson City Liberty Head Half Eagle was minted every year in the 1870s, five years in the 1880s, and four years in the 1890s.

THE $10 CARSON CITY EAGLE

The $10 Carson City Gold Liberty Head Eagle is the rarest of the three denominations produced at the Carson City Mint.

The 1870s issues are scarce in all grades and extremely rare in all Mint State grades due to small mintage outputs.

The 1880s and 1890s issues fall into the same category. Over 19 years, a grand total of only 300,000 gold Eagles were minted.

1871 Carson City $10 Liberty Head Eagle Gold Coin

The Gold $10 Carson City Liberty Eagle was minted from 1870 to 1884 and 1890 to 1893. Several issues experienced low mintage output ranging from 1,700 to 6,000. The $10-CC Liberty Eagle's overall survival rate is estimated at only 3%.

The best guess is that there are around only 10,000 surviving examples in all grades, with high Mint State examples being scarce and hard to obtain.

Like the $5 Carson City Half Eagle, the 1891 issue of the $10 Eagle had the highest mintage output, with slightly more than 100,000 coins struck, representing a third of the total coins minted over 19 years.

The 1891 issue checks in with the highest survival rate. It represents approximately 50% of the entire $10 Eagle population that survives today, all by itself, which shows just how rare the other dates are.

1874 Carson City $10 Liberty Head Eagle Gold Coin

The Carson City $10 Eagle was minted yearly during the 1870s, with five dates issued in the 1880s and four in the 1890s. When the U.S. Mint began producing Gold coinage in 1795, the $10 denomination was the second gold coin authorized and released by the U.S. Mint for circulation.

THE $20 CARSON CITY DOUBLE EAGLE

The $20 Carson City Liberty Head Double Eagle crosses over two $20 Liberty Head-type designs. Type II was minted from 1870 to 1876, and Type III was minted from 1876 to 1879, 1882 to 1885, and 1889 to 1893.

The Carson City Mint produced 864,000 Gold $20 Double Eagles over 19 years, skipping some years. Mintage production was the highest of the three denominations but still carries a very modest mintage output.

1871 Carson City $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle Gold Coin

The first Gold $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle minted at Carson City was in 1870. It had the lowest mintage output by far in the entire $20 Liberty Double Eagle series, with only 3,789 pieces struck.

The 1870-CC is a rarity in a class all by itself. It is crowned the "Queen" of Carson City Gold coins. Every investor and collector dreams of owning an 1870-CC $20 Double Eagle.

Ironically, unlike the $5 Carson City Half Eagle and $10 Eagle, the 1891 $20 Double Eagle issue had the second-lowest mintage of the $20 Carson City Double Eagle series instead of the highest, with only 5,000 coins minted.

Out of the 864,000 $20 Double Eagles minted at Carson City, it is estimated that only 3% of Type II and Type III examples have survived in all grades.

This figure represents approximately 25,000 surviving examples. Current population reports show that the Carson City $20 Liberty Double Eagle graded in certified Mint State condition ranges from scarce to rare for all dates.

Let's talk about Carson City's $20 Gold Double Eagles being rare!

The entire mintage output of Carson City's $20 Gold Double Eagles over 19 years from 1870 to 1893 was only 864,000.

Compare that to the Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Mints combined mintage of nearly 2 million $20 Liberty Head Double Eagles in 1876 alone!

Of all the Gold $20 Double Eagles minted and released by the U.S. Mint, fewer than one-half of one percent were struck at the Carson City Mint.

Carson City $20 Double Eagles are a little more accessible to locate than "CC" $5 Half Eagles and "CC" $10 Eagles but are still in short supply and are always in high demand as you climb the Uncirculated ladder. Their lack of availability and their values reflect this.

Proving there is no such thing as a "common" Gold $20 Carson City Double Eagle.

Collecting and investing in Carson City Gold Coins is a captivating historical journey with exceptional opportunities for growth in value and price appreciation.

Carson City Gold Coins are rare, valuable, famous, legendary, and treasured by collectors and investors worldwide.

Due to their rarity, assembling and building a typeset in VF (Very Fine) to AU (About Uncirculated) condition is perfectly acceptable.

In some cases, it's the only option. As a matter of fact, completing any Carson City Gold coin subset, mint set, typeset, or date run in any grade is impressive.

Their historical connection to living life in the late 1800s during the heydays of the "Wild West" intrigues collectors and investors of all calibers.

Carson City Gold Coins have an impressive track record of consistent price appreciation and holding their value when the rare coin market isn't performing at peak levels.

They are genuine, authentic historical late 19th-century American rarities and must be a part of any serious gold rare coin collection.
