BULLION COINS vs. RARE COINS

It's important to recognize the distinction between rare numismatic gold and silver coins and gold and silver bullion coins.

The value of gold and silver bullion coins is directly linked to the current market price of their metal content, which fluctuates daily, like stocks and bonds.

In contrast, numismatic rare gold and silver coins possess intrinsic value from their metal content, but more importantly, they also carry significant additional value due to their historical importance, scarcity, and rarity.

United States rare gold and silver coins are a finite fixed-supply, as they are no longer produced, and the coin's that have been melted, severely damaged or lost are gone forever.

Conversely, bullion coins are tangible assets that can be continuously mined and added to the global supply.

For example, an authenticated, graded, certified, and graded rare coin in well-preserved Uncirculated Mint State condition, such as a gold $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle, commands a much higher premium than its gold bullion equivalent due to its rarity and historical significance.

NUTS & BOLTS OF COLLECTING & INVESTING

It is essential that all acquisitions of rare United States gold and silver coins be authenticated, graded, and certified by one of the three leading Third-Party Grading Services (TPGS).

These companies are Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), and National Guaranty Corporation (NGC), preferably with (CAC) green sticker approval.

At Minuteman Rare Coin, we exclusively acquire authenticated and certified United States rare gold and silver coins graded and certified by CAC, PCGS, and NGC with CAC approval for our inventory and clients' collections.

Third-party grading has significantly reduced collector and investor risks associated with acquiring U.S. rare gold and silver coins.

Assembling a United States rare gold and silver coin collection that consists of certified coins and is well diversified, the value of your collection can easily be determined at the time of liquidation.

A professional rare coin expert has already established its authenticity and grade, backed by a 100% guarantee.

The following are key factors that influence the value and pricing of United States rare gold and silver coins:

1.) Grade

2.) Mintage

3.) Survival rates

4.) Demand

5.) Eye-appeal

6.) Investment potential

Acquiring rare coins in higher grades, with low mintages and low survival rates that are consistently in high demand greatly increase your potential for future financial rewards, as these coins possess exceptional investment potential.

For example, two 1909-O $5 Gold Indian Head Half Eagle coins can appear identical, share the same certified grade, low mintage output, low survival rate, and be in high demand, but subtle differences can make one coin more desirable than the other.

Often, the decision between two coins is influenced by its "eye appeal," which can significantly impact the coins value and command a premium price.

Eye appeal is as simple as, how does the coin look to you? Does it shine brilliantly? Does the coin still display its original luster?

How about toning? Are there beautiful rainbow colors that have evolved over time through natural toning that captivates you when you hold it?

Many people are unaware that about 90% of all transactions involving U.S. rare gold and silver coins occur privately, including dealer-to-dealer sales, dealer-to-client transactions, and private estate sales.

Therefore, it is essential that collectors and investors collaborate with a professional rare coin expert, like Minuteman Rare Coin, who possesses a trained eye, years of experience, and has an extensive network of resources and access to some of the finest, scarce, and rare coins in the rare coin market.

We have successfully assisted an endless number of clients in curating remarkable, eye appealing, historically significant, valuable, and rewarding collections of rare U.S. gold and silver coins personally tailored to their interests and budgets.

COLLECTING & INVESTING BY SERIES

Collecting and investing in United States rare gold and silver coins as a series can be challenging and daunting task.

Many series are extensive and have certain dates and mintmarks that are often unavailable or in such limited supply that they rarely appear on the market.

When they do, the competition for them can drive prices up to exorbitant levels, particularly for auctioned coins.

For example, the $1 Liberty Head gold piece and the
$20 Liberty Head Double Eagle had long runs with numerous date and mintmark combinations, spanning from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century.

The $1 gold piece was minted from 1849 to 1889, while the $20 Double Eagle was produced from 1850 to 1907. Each featured three distinct design types.

The Morgan Silver Dollar's standard series boasts 96 date and mintmark combinations, while the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar series includes 45 date and mintmarks with two distinct types.

Although the Seated Liberty dollar may not seem extensive, with only 45 issues, many early dates are extremely rare due to low mintages and mass melting, making it all but impossible to complete the series in any condition.

Coins in this series, in lower circulated grades VG (Very Good) to XF (Extremely Fine), can range from $6,000 to $8,000 each, and much higher for the coins minted at the Carson City Mint in Nevada from 1870 to 1873.

INVESTING & COLLECTING BY TYPESET

When investors and collectors face difficulties in assembling and completing individual rare United States gold and silver coin series, mostly due to the lack of availability for certain coins or financial constraints. They turn to completing valuable typesets instead.

The Typeset method of collecting and investing enables collectors and investors to acquire coins from a specific series without being restricted by the length of a series or date and mintmark.

Here are some notable and historically significant gold coin typesets:

A gold $5 half eagle typeset that features coins representing five different designs and eras.

The half eagle was minted from 1795 to 1929. The goal is to obtain one example (5) of each major design change in the highest certified grades that fits within your budget.

The $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle minted from 1850 to 1907 is a large series that makes for an exceptional typeset approach.

It consists of 3 coins, each representing a major design change and era.

1899-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle

A well-diversified U.S. rare coin collection must include the  Morgan Silver Dollar, minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, as well as the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar, minted from 1840 to 1873.

These classic American silver coins are cherished by collectors and investors for their beauty and historical significance. They both offer excellent opportunities for price appreciation and growth in value over time.

In addition to building valuable typesets of the Morgan Dollar and Seated Liberty Silver Dollars, we strongly encourage acquiring as many key and semi-key dates as possible from each series.

Our company excels in curating historically significant, valuable, and rewarding collections of rare United States gold and silver coin typesets.

INVESTING & COLLECTING BY MINT

All of the U.S. branch mints boast a rich historical legacy of our nation's journey.

For investors and collectors captivated by the "Wild West" and its legendary status, focusing on assembling valuable mint sets, typesets, and date runs of rare gold and silver coins from the Carson City and San Francisco Mints should be your primary focus.

Pursue your passions! Collecting and investing in rare United States gold and silver coins can be thrilling and potentially profitable, but it should also be FUN!

Carson City Morgan Silver Dollars and Carson Gold Coins are iconic historic, and legendary series, captivating collectors and investors from around the globe.

These coins were minted during the peak years of the "Wild West" in the late 1800s, this legendary era of U.S. history continues to fascinate millions worldwide.

Completing a 13-coin Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar mint set in the highest certified grades within your budget is a challenging, formidable, and valuable accomplishment for its proud owner.

A Carson City mint set offers an exceptional investment opportunity for solid growth in value and price appreciation over time, supported by its historical price performance.

The charm of Southern history includes acquiring rare gold coins from the Charlotte and Dahlonega branch mints (1838-1861) and gold and silver coins from the New Orleans mint (1838-1861 and 1879-1909), creating a stunning, diverse, and eye-opening collection.

Combining rare gold and silver coins from these three southern branch mints are excellent additions to any rare coin collection!

INVESTING & COLLECTING BY DENOMINATION

Another strategy involves collecting and investing in historically significant and valuable rare gold and silver coins by denomination.

With gold, aim to concentrate on one or more of the $1, $2.50, $5, $10, or $20 gold coin denominations, and acquiring as many specimens in the highest certified grades as your budget will allow.

For silver, we suggest focusing on one or more of the seven $1 silver denominations minted between 1794 and 1935, specifically targeting scarce, rare, and key date coins.

The Morgan Silver Dollar, with its 96 date and mintmark combinations, and the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar, with 45 date and mintmark variations, are excellent series to adopt the "acquire as many as possible" strategy.
