Childhood dreams of a United States Rare Gold and Silver Coin Collector

Updated: Oct 28

How Collecting Rare Coins Enriched My Life: A Journey of Discovery.

As I look back on my childhood days, I am reminded of the fascinating hobby that not only captured my imagination but also enriched my life in ways I never could have imagined.

One day, I stumbled upon a forgotten box of old coins in my grandparents' attic. Little did I know that this chance discovery would begin a lifelong passion of mine.

Each coin had a story to tell – from the dates they were minted, where they were minted, to the historical events they were witness to.

This ignited my curiosity about American history, geography, and the art of coin design.

When my Grandfather gave me the collection to keep, it became a treasure trove of knowledge that went beyond anything a textbook could teach me. Collecting rare coins became a connection to American history for me.

In this blog post, I will share how this seemingly simple hobby had such a profound impact on my childhood and helped shape the person I am today.

The Legacy:

My Grandfather taught me what a mint mark was. My Grandparents shared with me events that happened during the particular years a coin was minted and as a bonus, what life was like for them during those years. Priceless stuff!

For instance my Grandparents shared with me that the 1937 Buffalo shown below, events like the Hindenburg disaster happened, the Golden Gate Bridge opened, and Amelia Earhart disappeared. Fascinating events, to say the least!

This coin is an example of one that was part of the original collection my Grandparents gave me, unfortunately I didn't keep it. I used the coin as part of a trade to purchase my first pre-1933 gold coin, an 1850 $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle when I was 18 years old.

Curiosity and Learning:

I was born in the heart and soul of the American Revolution, Boston, Massachusetts. So I was exposed to our nation's history at a very young age.

As a young child we visited places like the "Old State House" in the heart of Boston, the Lexington Green, Concord, Massachusetts, where "The Shot heard round the world," was heard and began the American Revolution and eventual independence from the British Empire.

We followed along Paul Revere's path all the way from Boston to Concord to let citizens know that "The Brits are Coming!!" We visited his house and a Tavern that he used to knock back a few pints with the boys. No doubt talking about how they were going to break free from the British.

Developing Patience and Perseverance:

I learned at an early age that assembling a rare gold and silver coin collection wasn't an easy task. It required patience, perseverance, and dedication.

Whether I was scouring local antique shops, attending coin shows, or trading with fellow collectors, I learned the value of perseverance and most important, patience.

Not every coin came into my possession easily, but the thrill of the chase taught me that hard work and determination could yield incredible rewards.

Connecting with Generations:

One of the most exciting aspects of collecting rare coins was the connection it fostered between generations. I would spend hours listening to stories from my grandparents about the times when certain coins were in circulation and the many stories and history that was going on at the time.

These conversations will always be embedded in my mind and memories, allowing me to share a special bond with them, now that they have long passed away. It's a reminder that history isn't just something to read about – it's something to experience and pass down.

Appreciating Beauty and Craftsmanship:

Rare coins are not only pieces of history but also works of art.

Their intricate designs have always fascinated me. Through collecting, I developed an eye for aesthetics and an appreciation for the craftsmanship that went into each coin and lead me to become a Numismatist.

Learning Investment Potential When Assembling a United States Gold and Silver Rare Coin Collection :

As I grew older, my interest in coins evolved to include an understanding of their investment value and I began a career as a Numismatist. (The studying and collecting of coins).

Researching market trends, learning about grading systems, and observing how coin values changed over time taught me important lessons in the choices I made when acquiring a typeset, mint set or to begin a date run within a particular series.

This early exposure to the world of rare coins laid the groundwork for a solid understanding of how and what to look for in certain gold and silver rare coins that would and could increase a coin or a set of coin's value over time.
